Just days after more than 46,000 fans packed Commonwealth Stadium to watch Canada defeat Uzbekistan 2-0 in a Send-Off Series match, OEG Sports & Entertainment, the City of Edmonton and Explore Edmonton have unveiled plans for a six-week “Summer of Soccer” in ICE District.
Running from June 11 to July 19, the program will feature 97 free FIFA World Cup watch parties across the district. At least 17 matches, including every Team Canada game, will be shown inside The Tent at Fan Park @ ICE District.
The watch parties are designed for all ages and will include food trucks, beverages, DJs, face painting and other activities. Gates will open one hour before kickoff for games shown inside the tent.
Canada’s opening match against Bosnia Herzegovina on June 12 headlines the early schedule, followed by games against Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24. Any additional Canada matches will also be shown in the tent.
A major highlight arrives on July 1 with Canada Celebrates, a free fan event combining live match viewings, football-themed activities, cultural programming, music, food and family-friendly entertainment. Fans will be able to watch three Round of 32 matches beginning at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
The soccer festivities will continue through the knockout rounds, including quarterfinals, semifinals and the World Cup final on July 19.
Not every match will be shown. Seven late-night games have been excluded because Edmonton’s noise bylaw only permits amplified sound until 10 p.m.
The celebrations will also overlap with the return of the Tasty Truck Food Festival, which takes over Fan Park on June 12 and 13 while World Cup watch parties are underway.
