General Motors will invest $2 billion supported by another $259 million in grants by the Ontario government.
According to the news release, the investment will ensure the continuation of vehicle production in Oshawa and pave the way for GM’s first electric vehicle (EV) production line in Ontario at Ingersoll.
CAMI plant in Ingersoll will be transformed into the first full-scale commercial electric vehicle production facility in Canada. GM’s first electric light-duty commercial vehicle brand BrightDrop EV600 will be brought into production and commercialized here by the end of the year.
Premier Doug Ford says the investment will secure 2,600 jobs in Oshawa.
John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham said, “I am thrilled to say that, as part of a $2 billion investment, General Motors (GM) will be adding a third shift to the Oshawa plant, bringing the number of new jobs created at the plant since reopening to more than 2,600. Oshawa will also become GM’s only plant to produce both heavy-duty and light-duty pickup trucks.”
