Alberta today announced the details of how eligible residents can apply for the $600 in affordability payments.
Who and What:
Eligible Albertans can apply for $600 ($100 monthly) affordability payments starting January 18th.
Seniors 65 or older and families with household incomes below $180,000 per year will receive $600 for each dependent child under 18 over six months. The provincial government will use CRA 2021 tax data to verify eligibility based on income.
Seniors who are not receiving the Alberta Seniors Benefit and eligible parents with children under 18 can apply online through the government portal or in person at locations across the province.
Parents whose child turns 18 during the application period will receive $100 for every month they are under 18 and those who have a baby during the application period will receive $100 per month starting the month they are born. Parents who share custody 40 to 60% of the time can apply to get $50 per month for each child.
Eligible kinship or foster caregivers caring for a child under the age of 18 are automatically enrolled in the program and do not need to sign up to receive their affordability payments. They will receive their first payments at the end of January.
Albertans receiving the Alberta Seniors Benefit are automatically enrolled in the program and do not need to sign up to receive their benefits. The distribution of additional monthly payments will begin on January 31.
Eligibility for Seniors:
- Age 65 or older by June 30, 2023.
- Adjusted household income is below $180,000 according to your 2021 tax return.
- Alberta resident as of November 30, 2022, and remain so on the first day of each month between January and June to be eligible for each month’s payment.
- Do not receive the Alberta Seniors Benefit, AISH or Income Support (these clients do not need to apply as they will get payments automatically).
- Have not been incarcerated for 90 days or more during the January to June 2023 period.
Eligibility for Families:

How to Apply:
Eligible Albertans who can apply for affordability payments should create a verified Alberta.ca Account (formerly known as MyAlberta Digital ID). As per the news release, if you already have a ‘basic’ account, you will need to upgrade by adding your valid Alberta driver’s licence or ID card to your profile. Once the account is confirmed, you can apply for benefits via the online portal on January 18th.
You can also apply at a registry office or through Alberta Supports on January 18th.
Applications can be submitted until June 30th.
When Will You Recieve Payments:
Alberta will issue payments in 6 monthly installments of $100. As per the website, payments will be issued at the end of the month of the successful application and payments will be retroactive to the first month you are eligible.

If you actually work for a living , have no kids and also make less than $60,000 a year. You are not entitled to anything… How nice is that?
