Girl Guides of Canada has announced a new name for Brownies, the program for 7-and-8-year-olds.

Brownies will now be called Embers.
Girl Guides decided to change the name last November after hearing from current and former members that the name caused harm and was a barrier for racialized girls and women to belong to the group.
According to the press release, changing this name means creating a more inclusive space where all girls in Canada can feel welcome and proud to belong in Girl Guides.
Girl Guide members voted to decide between two shortlisted names, “Embers” over “Comets”.
The names were decided in consultation with racialized girls in Guiding, the National Indigenous Advisory Circle, community partners and organizations, GGC National Youth Council, Provincial Commissioners and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Facilitators.
CEO of Girl Guides of Canada, Jill Zelmanovits said announcing the name change, “We can’t wait to keep bringing the magic of Girl Guides to girls ages 7 and 8, now with the name Embers.”
The change is effective today, and the name will be fully adopted by September 1st across all of the Girl Guides resources, websites, and platforms.

The ones who have the bone to pick here are more than likely the (I need to be politically correct) parents. The kids don’t care. They’re part of a group that has fun and learns some different life skills and don’t care about the name. This reminds me of Uncle Ben’s rice and Aunt Jemima. – ridiculous.
