This summer, embark on an unforgettable adventure and get up close and personal with the magnificent great white sharks on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.
Founded by shark researcher Dr. Neil Hammerschlag, Atlantic Shark Expeditions combines ecotourism and citizen science to offer the public a chance to learn about, appreciate, and contribute to the protection of these awe-inspiring creatures.
Dr. Hammerschlag’s team conducts daily trips out of Halifax from July through early September and from September to October from West Pubnico. Onboard marine biologists provide educational briefings to all participants.
Guests have the option to view sharks from above or below water on a snorkel from a secure cage (weather permitting). Cage divers will be supplied with masks, snorkels, wetsuits (7mm), gloves, hoods, and boots, but they can also bring their own gear.
Participants can contribute as citizen scientists by sharing their trip photos and videos to help create a photographic identification database of the region’s great whites.
The minimum age for joining the expedition is 10, and those under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over 19 years old.
As with all wildlife encounters, shark sightings cannot be guaranteed. Those on the expedition may get to see Blue Sharks, Great Whites, Mako, and Porbeagle. However, the unpredictability of nature and the quest for these enigmatic predators are all part of the thrilling adventure. Regardless of sightings, guests are sure to learn a great deal about sharks from onboard marine biologists and local experts.
According to the website, the tours are conducted under a special permit from the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans under SARA, the Species at Risk Act.
