With places on the Bruce Peninsula like Tobermory, rich with history, or Sauble Beach and its expansive stretch of sand and blue water, the region’s smaller communities are certainly still worth a visit. These different parts of the Peninsula all have something different to offer a vacation. And in Wiarton, on the southeast side of the Bruce Peninsula, visitors can experience it all!
Home to the famous prognosticator, Wiarton Willie, Wiarton located approximately 3 hours from Toronto is an excellent location for additional accommodations for anyone planning a Sauble Beach Day, but it is also a vacation destination in its own right. The local beach in Wiarton offers a quieter but equally exciting and attractive day at the beach. All the rich history you might find in the north in Tobermory continues all the way down the Peninsula to include several historic buildings, sites, and homes within Wiarton.
Come for the beach(es) and hikes, but stay in Wiarton for the many summer festivals, the excellent and highly rated dining scene, and all the surrounding beauty the Georgian Bay has to offer.
The Best Trails around Wiarton
Wiarton is surrounded by water, of course, but also two Conservation Areas on either side of town. These both offer incredible hiking opportunities within a short drive from Wiarton, while the region has plenty of other trail, hiking, or cycling routes to offer visitors. These trails that wind through or surround Wiarton offer awesome views of the Bay, of unique and stunning rock formations of the Niagara Escarpment, and lush forests. A few hiking trails also provide a look into some local history.
- The 5km worth of trails around the Spirit Rock Conservation Area are where hikers will find a great deal of local history, as the area was once a residential property, the McNeill Estate. This Estate (the Corran) once stood as an impressive 17-room mansion. The mansion’s ruins and the barn’s ruins are still on the property and visible from the trails. There are four trails overall, but most of them overlap. There is also 30-step 3-turn Spiral Staircase for added excitement.
- And on the other side of Wiarton (and other side of Colpoy’s Bay) is the Bruce’s Caves Conservation Area with areas and views that stay true to the park name. It is about 1.5km to the Bruce Caves and back from the parking lot (end of Bruce Caves Road). The tall and shallow caves are generally safe and simple to enter for great photo ops.
- Both of those above-mentioned Conservation Areas are bypassed by the Bruce Trail which offers which offers several more kilometres of trail around Colploy Bay and the Bruce Peninsula. Also on the Bruce Trail, closer to the Bruce Caves, are the Skinner Bluffs which provide sweeping Georgian Bay views. The climb up takes about 15-30 minutes there and back.
- And once you’ve explored Bruce’s Caves, be sure to make time for Greig’s Caves at Lion’s Head! The park is open from spring to fall to allow hikers access to the cave structures, which are more showcases of the beauty of the Niagara Escarpment.
Beach & Water Fun on the South Bruce Peninsula
As a town on the Georgian Bay shore, and as one on the south portion of the Bruce Peninsula, there are beach options in Wiarton, up and down the shoreline, and across the Peninsula on the other side of Lake Huron.
- Keep the beach fun or swimming right in town and within a walk from Downtown Wiarton with Bluewater Park. Swimming is allowed on the sandy Huron beach, while the park is also home to an outdoor pool. Bluewater Park is also an ideal Wiarton spot for picnics, photography, sunrises, and simple walks. This is also the home of the Wiarton Willie statue, which pays tribute to the local groundhog that the town calls on ever February for his weather predictions.
- The lakeside community and popular vacation or swimming destination of Sauble Beach is about 23km southwest of Wiarton. This expansive sandy shoreline is a beautiful place for a swim, patio drinks, accommodations, picnics, and more.
- The Beaches of Oliphant are a bit closer to Wiarton, with about 15km between the two towns, but are more ideal for fishing and shoreline angling. And if you lack experience or equipment, the local operators of Rising Tide Fishing Charters are located in Oliphant for Lake Huron fishing tours. There is still a nice swimming area beside the marina, equipped with washrooms and a large parking lot. This is also a great area to launch a canoe or kayak, with a handful of islands offering shelter for the paddle.
- Take in a slower-paced water adventure at Sauble Falls Provincial Park, 18km west of Wiarton, and on the Sauble River. The park office has canoes and kayaks available for rent, and guidance on river paddle routes.
Arts, History, Cultural Attractions
The history of Wiarton is on full display all across town. This comes from the architecture and buildings, of course, but also the town’s central statue of Wiarton Willie. The local groundhog is called upon each year to help predict the coming spring and summer seasons. Willie has such a deep history in town that he is commemorated as a statue in Wiarton’s Bluewater Park. More Wiarton Willie festivities take place each February for Groundhog Day. And aside from Willie, the rich history of the south Bruce Peninsula is on full display in many other ways.
- The Historic Walking Tour of Wiarton offers a deep dive into the history of several different buildings, outdoor sites, or neighbourhoods and offers a chance to view Wiarton’s best-kept historical homes. The Heritage Society has similar tours and historical deep dives for Allenford, 27km south of Wiarton, and the Sauble Falls area, 18km west of Wiarton.
- The Rural Garden & Farm Tour of Grey Bruce offers a driving tour of most of the Peninsula as it stops at different farm stores. These are not only good chances to browse an array of locally-made or produced goods, but are also great chances to meet the makers and producers.
- The Spirit Rock Conservation Area is a destination near Wiarton where hikers can view historical artifacts up close as nature retakes the stone ruins. Spirit Rock is a great hiking destination, but also a place where interpretive signage helps to explain more about the family that once lived here, their large estate and mansion, and the incredible geology of the park.
- Downtown Wiarton is a thriving place for all sorts of local shopping. Browse art, clothing, jewellery, home décor, thrift or vintage shops, food stores, and more.

Summer Events & Festivals
Embrace and experience all sorts of local culture through the upcoming events in Wiarton and the surrounding areas. This could include food and drink, art, entertainment, music and concerts, sports and spectating, and many other parts of the South Bruce region.
- The Wiarton Farmers’ Market (Fridays, May-October) is a multi-season event with its peak during the warm summer months. The market pops up weekly in downtown Wiarton to offer the goods and goodies of the vendors, as well as all the shops or restaurants of Wiarton.
- The Wiarton Concert Series (July 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, August 6, 13, 20, 27) is another multi-weekend event in Wiarton set to include four different days of performances. The concerts take place in Wiarton’s waterfront Bluewater Park.
- Compared to the many other events and festivals around South Bruce, the Wiarton Lavender Festival (July 25-26, 2026) is a young event, now in its third year. The two-day festival is hosted by the Bluewater Lavender Farm in Wiarton and is set to include live music, a market of over 20 vendors, yoga sessions, and educational events.
- Marathoners and spectators alike can make a weekend out of the Bruce Peninsula Multisport Race (August 8, 2026). There are four races for which to register, including a kids’ race of running and biking. The adult races include paddling, running, and biking.
- The Sandhill Creek Flower Farm host two summer events to help celebrate their massive flower harvests: the Tulip Festival (May), and the Sunflower Walk or Yoga with Sunflowers in August.

- Enjoy a unique stay with glamping options from Evergreen Forest, or the Farm on the Lake, both a short drive south of Wiarton.
- The room and rental options from the Magical Retreat are quite unlike any others in the area. The four bedrooms of the private home rentals each have their own movie themes, including a Jurassic Park, Casino Royale, Barbie, and Harry Potter room. The rental also features a hot tub, an entertainment room, and karaoke facilities.
- The rural and parkland areas east of Wiarton, around the Escarpment and Bluffs, are home to quaint accommodations like the Maple Haven Bed & Breakfast.
- Camping is available at the nearby Sauble Falls Provincial Park from April to October with a mix of serviced and non-serviced sites.
The Wiarton Willy Inn
I would not recommend this motel to anyone.
The staff was friendly, but the rooms are to be desired.
First off, the ceramic floor eas very poorly installed. There was about 1/4” gap between tiles, which is a safety hazard. We had our elderly mother with us & i was afraid she would trip on the tiles. I stubbed my toes on it.
The entry door wether stripping was missing fir about 3”, where any small creature could enter.
The rest of the floor was very wavy & uneven.
Shower didn’t work properly & there was no stopper for the bath tub!
The floors were not clean.
The towels & bed sheets were stained.
From my experience, this was the worst place I’ve stayed.
To me it is an insult to Wiarton Willy!!!
I’ve always liked Wiarton, but I would give this motel a 0.
Definitely not worthy the price they charge for staying one night.
