Ontario is bringing back indoor capacity limits effective December 18, 2021, at 12:01 a.m to mitigate the rapid rise of COVID-19 cases in the province fueled by the Omicron variant of concern.
The province says this measure is being taken to reduce opportunities for close contact in high-risk indoor settings with large crowds and when face coverings/masks are not always worn.
1,808 new COVID-19 cases were reported today with Omicron projected to become the dominant strain in the province within a short time.
New Limits
Starting this Saturday, the following indoor areas of venues with a usual capacity of 1,000 or more will have to limit the capacity to 50 per cent:
- facilities used for sports and recreational fitness activities
- entertainment facilities such as concert venues, theatres and cinemas
- racing venues
- meeting and event spaces
- studio audiences in commercial film and television production
- museums
- galleries
- aquariums, zoos
- science centres
- landmarks

- and fair, rural exhibitions, and festivals.
Ontario is also expanding the eligibility for a 3rd dose or booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine for all 18+ residents beginning this Monday, December 20th.
The province is also setting up free of charge rapid testing at pop-up testing sites in high-traffic settings such as malls, retail settings, holiday markets, public libraries and transit hubs. Residents can also pick up free testing kits at these sites.
