Ontario to Lower 24-Hour Electricity Price to Off-Peak Rate Starting Jan. 18th

Ford administration is fixing 24-hour electric rates to the current off-peak rate of 8.2 cents per kilowatt-hour starting Tuesday, January 18, 2022.

The government says this move will provide electricity-rate relief to small businesses, farms and residents spending more time at home while the province is in Modified Step Two.

The lowered rate of off-peak rate of 8.2 cents per kilowatt-hour will start at 12:01 am on Tuesday, January 18, 2022. The rebate will last for 21 days until February 7th. This fixed price will apply irrespective of whether the customer who pay regulated rates set by the Ontario Energy Board is on Time-of-Use (TOU) or Tiered pricing.

The current time-of-use prices are off-peak: 8.2 ¢/kWh, mid-peak: 11.3 ¢/kWh, on-peak: 17.0 ¢/kWh.

“We know that spending more time at home means using more electricity during the day when prices are higher, that’s why we are moving to off-peak electricity rates 24 hours per day, seven days a week,” said Todd Smith, Minister of Energy in a statement. “The off-peak rate will provide immediate savings for families, small businesses and farms as all Ontarians work together to slow the spread of the Omicron variant.”

Ontario lowered electric rates during most of 2020 beginning in March of that year and until early 2021.

Question to ponder: Since the Ontario government is providing electricity rate relief from January 18th – a day after in-person schooling is supposed to begin – will online classes and restrictions continue for another 21 days?
