The site, known for its views of Wapizagonke Lake, is a major attraction but has reached the end of its functional lifespan.

Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault detailed the investment, which will support modernizing the structure with sustainable materials while improving accessibility. The project will also enhance the site’s interpretive potential, providing educational elements on conservation and Indigenous heritage.

A new boardwalk will be installed, guiding visitors through the history of Parks Canada’s preservation efforts. The redevelopment will also highlight the cultural significance of the area for Indigenous groups, including the Atikamekw and W8banakiak, who have historically used the land for travel, hunting, and fishing.

La Mauricie National Park, established in 1970, spans 536 square kilometers and serves as a protected area representative of the Precambrian region of the St. Lawrence River and Great Lakes. The park attracts approximately 250,000 visitors annually.

The Passage lookout will be closed for construction from spring to late fall 2025, with completion expected by spring 2026.
