- Create a historical tour of Port Dover with a visit to the Port Dover Harbour Museum and the Port Dover West Pier Heritage Lighthouse. Both are located on Harbour Street, where there is more historical scenery and art to take in.
- The Commercial Fishermen Monument opposite the lighthouse honours commercial fishermen who lost their lives on the lake. The bronze and concrete statue stands as a lasting tribute to the region’s fishing heritage and perilous livelihood.
- The Lighthouse Festival is Port Dover’s local summer theatre with a new program each year. You’ll also find the theatre on Harbour Street.
- The Cliff Site National Historic Site of Canada commemorates the 1670 French claim to Lake Erie’s north shore by Sulpician priests Dollier and Galinée. Marked by a memorial cross, it symbolizes an early step in Canada’s nation-building and holds historical and archaeological significance.
- Port Dover is famous for the Friday the 13th motorcycle rally, held since 1981. The event attracts over 100,000 bikers in summer. Known as the world’s largest single-day motorcycle event, its popularity peaks during warm weather, though dedicated riders still attend in smaller numbers during winter months.
The Best Port Dover Trails
There are many natural and shoreline areas around Port Dover which offer great hiking and biking opportunities. Plus, the town itself is best explored on foot or by bike.
- The Lynn Valley trail is an 8km path which permits bikes and hikers, and which connects Simcoe to Port Dover. The trail follows the Lynn River and travels past the waterfall on the north side of town.
- Lynn River Falls on the river is a short walk off the trail from the plaque commemorating Robert Nichol on Tisdale Road.
- The Hay Creek Conservation Area has a 3.5km loop for hikers which leads to and from the Hay Creek Reservoir.
- Turkey Point Provincial Park is about 20km west of Port Dover, with another beach and some of the best views of Lake Erie. The park’s hiking trails include one which looks out over the water from the bluffs, and two additional forested trails.
