A pumpkin weighing hundreds of pounds is strange enough to warrant a closer look. Dropping one from a crane onto a car takes Smoky Lake’s annual pumpkin obsession considerably further.

Smoky Lake Great White North Pumpkin Weigh-off & Fair
The Great White North Pumpkin Fair & Weigh-Off takes over Smoky Lake on October 2 and 3, 2026, turning the small Alberta town into a mix of agricultural competition, fall fair, food stop and community festival.
The pumpkins were always, and continue to be, the stars of the fair, and you’ll get to see some of the biggest pumpkins in Alberta at the weigh-off. If you are making the drive, particularly from Edmonton, there is enough happening around town to make a day of it rather than simply watching the weigh-off and heading home.
What to see & do at the Pumpkin Fair?
Saturday is the main day to visit if the giant pumpkins are your priority.
The Great White North Pumpkin Weigh-Off begins at noon at the Complex, bringing the oversized pumpkins, squash and gourds grown for competition onto the scales.
Then comes the fair’s most unusual spectacle. At 5:30 p.m., the Pumpkin Drop takes place near the car wash, with a giant pumpkin hoisted above a vehicle before gravity finishes the job at the large field along Harvest Gold Drive (Parking Area Near the car wash).
That combination makes Saturday worth planning as a full-day outing rather than a quick festival stop.
What else can you do between the pumpkins?
Saturday’s schedule spreads activities around Smoky Lake, including the Show ‘N Shine downtown, a midway, corn maze, farmers’ and artisan markets, live pumpkin carving and horse-and-wagon rides.
The Smoky Lake Museum also becomes part of the day, with a threshing demonstration scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m., weather permitting.
Families have several child-focused options, including free pumpkin painting and the midway. For adults, beer gardens operate during the day.
Friday night or Saturday?
Choose Saturday if you are making only one trip. It has the weigh-off, Pumpkin Drop and the broadest selection of activities.
Friday works better as an evening visit, with the midway, food trucks and Pumpkin Showcase Market among the scheduled activities.
A notable 2026 addition is the Drone Light Show from 9 to 10 p.m, giving visitors a reason to stay into the evening. Friday’s schedule also includes the Pumpkin Pie Contest before Saturday’s giant-pumpkin competition.
What should you eat?
This is one festival where arriving hungry makes sense.
Food trucks operate around the main festival area, while the Curling Rink serves perogies and sausage alongside its beer gardens. The Ukrainian Showcase at National Hall also includes Ukrainian food, alongside music, vendors, displays and demonstrations.
For an early start Saturday, the Kinette Pancake Breakfast runs from 8 to 10:30 a.m.
Is it worth driving from Edmonton?
For visitors interested in agricultural fairs, unusual Alberta traditions, or a family fall day trip, the appeal isn’t simply seeing a large pumpkin. It is the concentration of activities around town, capped by two uncommon spectacles: competitive giant-pumpkin weighing and the Pumpkin Drop.
Start your weekend with a walk through the town’s Pumpkin Park (home to Smoky Lake Pumpkins, a famous roadside attraction), beside the CN Rail Museum and make your way to the Pumpkin Fair to find a number of food items made from-you guessed it-pumpkins!
Plan several hours if you want only the markets and weigh-off. To see the weigh-off, explore the town and stay for the Pumpkin Drop; treat Saturday as a full-day excursion.
If it is your first time, explore a section of the Iron Horse Trail. The Metis Crossing Cultural Heritage Gathering Centre is a short drive from Smoky Lake and is a great way to end your day at the festival.
Dress for an October day that involves moving between indoor and outdoor locations, and check conditions before leaving. The threshing demonstration, for example, is explicitly weather-dependent.
