Équité Association, and its Investigative Services team, which assists insurance companies in tackling fraud and crime have released the latest list of the most stolen cars in Canada.
Based on the thefts from 2022, topping the list for the second consecutive year is the Honda CR-V, followed by Dodge RAM 1500 Series and Ford F150 Series.
The report highlighted that most of the top stolen vehicles are models from 2019 or newer, indicating a trend where criminals target newer vehicles for higher profits. These vehicles are often sold overseas or re-VINed for sale within Canada.
Dodge Ram1500 series (2014), Dodge Ram1500 series (2017) topped the list in Alberta and Atlantic Canada respectively while Honda CRV (2020) model was the top stolen vehicle in both Ontario, and Quebec.
Per the report, the year 2022 saw a significant rise in auto thefts, reaching historic levels. Ontario reported a 48% increase, while Quebec saw a 50% surge. This spike has positioned Canada as a notable source country in the international illegal vehicle trade. The thefts are attributed to both domestic and international criminal organizations, with the proceeds funding activities like domestic drug trafficking and international terrorism.
Terri O’Brien, President & CEO of Équité Association, emphasized the need for a collaborative approach to address this national crisis, involving auto manufacturers, governments, law enforcement, and other stakeholders.
