Ridiculously Fake Toonies Circulating Now in Ontario

Ontario Provincial Police is asking public help in locating people who used counterfeit toonies in the town of Hawkesbury.

The toonies may at one glance look genuine because of the bi-metallic look, but has obvious differences like the walrus on one side and a ridiculous effigy of Queen Elizabeth on the other.

It also says “Z DOLLARD” instead of “2 DOLLARS”, “ELIZABETH I-I” instead of “ELIZABETH II”, and “P.G. REGINA” instead of “D.G. REGINA”.

The fake $2 coin which was used in a Regent Street store in Hawkesbury also has the year of mintage as 1990, a full six years after $2 in coin form was introduced.

Hawkesbury OPP is asking those with information about counterfeit toonies to contact them at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222- 8477 (TIPS).

If you like to see a giant toonie, visit Campbellford, the hometown of Brent Townsend who designed the image of a polar bear in early summer on an ice floe on this unique coin.
