Rogers Communications has announced plans to acquire BAI Communications’ Canadian operations and bring 5G connectivity to the entire Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway system.

The move will allow Rogers to build a comprehensive and reliable 5G network across the TTC, including access to 911 services throughout the subway system.

Currently, TTC users can only call 911 where the cellular network exists – on station platforms, concourses, and approximately 25% of the tunnels.

The network build is expected to take two years due to limited overnight construction windows, and Rogers will work with the TTC to develop a phased deployment plan.

According to the news release, upgrades to the existing fibre network and radio equipment will modernize the network, increase cellular capacity, and provide new 5G mobile services for millions of users.

Rogers says the completed 5G network will offer seamless wireless coverage with mobile voice and data services in all 75 stations and almost 80km of Toronto’s subway system.

This investment builds on Rogers’ existing initiatives to bring advanced mobile connectivity to underground transit riders across the country, including agreements with TransLink and the Société de transport de Montréal to bring connectivity to their respective systems.

The acquisition of BAI Canada is expected to close within two weeks, subject to closing conditions.

Per the news release, Rogers is Canada’s biggest investor in 5G and has the country’s largest 5G network.
