TELUS World of Science – Edmonton will open its doors at no cost for a full day of science and technology programming supported by Amazon Canada.
The initiative is intended to broaden access to STEM learning and introduce young people to real-world applications of robotics, coding, and creative problem-solving. Organizers emphasize that the partnership aims to reduce barriers for underrepresented youth and expand exposure to hands-on discovery.
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on December 11 at the science centre, with free general admission available on a first-come, first-served basis. Regular exclusions apply, including laser shows, IMAX films, special events, and the Jurassic World by Brickman exhibition.
Programming Overview
- Your Voice is Power – Art: Participants select lyric-based art pages and illustrate imagery that the words inspire. The activity is designed to connect creative expression with broader discussions around social themes, aligning with the event’s objective to make STEM approachable for all ages while blending artistic interpretation with technology-focused programming in an accessible, drop-in format.
- Your Voice is Power – Words: Visitors aged 10 and older experiment with coding and writing methods to build songs that address social justice concepts. The activity invites participants to test whether generative AI can support lyric creation, offering a practical introduction to computational thinking while encouraging reflection on how digital tools influence storytelling and advocacy.
- Your Voice is Power – Music: Ages 12 and up use Python within EarSketch to assemble beats, instruments, and lyrics from pre-built templates. Participants may also record their own vocal lines. The workshop demonstrates how coding intersects with music production and highlights how technical skills can support personal expression and community-driven messages.
- Amazon Hercules Robot Demonstration: Guests encounter an Amazon Hercules Robot capable of moving loads up to 1,000 pounds inside fulfillment centres. The demonstration illustrates the operational role of robotics in large-scale logistics and provides a concrete example of how advanced automation shapes workplace processes and future workforce needs.
- Zeidler Dome Shows & Galleries: Scheduled dome programming includes Big Astronomy, Legends of the Northern Sky, Aurora: Lights of Wonder, and Laser Holiday Magic. All permanent galleries will be open, offering interactive exhibits across multiple scientific disciplines.
