Toronto District School Board and Toronto Catholic District School Board have cancelled in-person classes for January 18th as Toronto has declared a snowstorm condition.
Classes were cancelled on Monday due to the heavy and disruptive snowfall across much of southern Ontario.
Mayor John Tory declared a major snowstorm condition to clear roads of snow without being impeded by traffic and parking.
The news release by the city states, “When a major snowstorm condition is declared, parking on roads designated as snow routes is prohibited for a period of 72 hours. This will allow for the snow removal of windrows left by the City’s snowplows, which can restrict traffic flow, interfere with pedestrians and parking and obstruct sightlines. ”
Toronto is advising residents to stay home after this snowfall so that city can remove snow from roads efficiently.
The city says road users should expect delays, and “should also keep a safe distance from snow clearing vehicles, be patient and give City crews room to make our roads and sidewalks safe and accessible.”
Given the amount of snow, @CityofToronto has declared this a major snow storm condition. This will help snow removal operations once snow plowing is complete. For this effort, the City has deployed:

There will not be live synchronous online classes for TDSB students. The news release states, “Where possible, teachers will provide voluntary class work through established online platforms for students who wish to continue their learning. Toronto says snowstorm condition declaration may be cancelled sooner than 72 hours or it may be extended longer than 72 hours depending on how much snow needs to be removed.
The city is also advising residents not to park on designated snow routes and parking on a designated snow route during a major snow event is subject to a fine of up to $200.
