Outdoor Winter Fun around Goderich
Find all the essential winter fun and recreational opportunities in or near Goderich, including a couple of conservation areas with extensive trails.
- Menesetung Bridge, which spans the Maitland River, offers a spectacular winter walk with views of the river and the harbour. The Tiger Dunlop Heritage Trail connects to the Maitland Trail, and the Goderich-to-Auburn Rail Trail offers a fabulous opportunity for snowshoeing when there is sufficient snowfall.
- Goderich Main Beach is peaceful during the winter months, offering a quiet contrast to the bustling summer season. With fewer tourists around, take in the serene beauty of Lake Huron on a tranquil shoreline walk.
- The closest of those Conservation Areas is the Falls Reserve, where the 7km of trails are open to hikers, cross-country skiers, or snowshoers.
- Also nearby are a few shorter trails within the Naftel’s Creek Conservation Area, where all of the same activities are permitted in the winter.
- The George Taylor Conservation Area east of Goderich is also open to cross-country skiing, as well as hiking. The area is a quiet place to escape town for a simple hike or possibly birding and nature photography.
- Don’t forget those ice skates! Goderich’s John Cove Memorial rinks at Victoria Park are open each day and free for public use.
- Catch the famous Huron beach sunsets from Goderich’s waterfront areas and parks. The earlier winter sunsets are a perfect way to conclude a day of exploring the area- whether you view from Rotary Cove, St. Christopher’s Beach, or the Main Beach to the north.
Goderich Winterfest
The Winterfest Weekend in Goderich guarantees three days of family-friendly winter fun.
- Friday, Feb 6 kicks off the weekend with family-friendly and evening events, including “Make a Mess!” indoor play for kids at the Huron County Museum, the Downtown Cinnamon Bun Trail, a candlelit walk through Maitland Woods, and a Legion meat draw with live music.
- Saturday, Feb 7 is packed with Winterfest highlights, featuring outdoor games and attractions at Courthouse Square, movie day at the library, Goderich Crushers ringette games, the Rotary Chili Cook-off, indoor kids’ play, open swim, and an evening meat draw at the Legion.
- Sunday, Feb 8 wraps up the weekend with more ringette action, open gym and skate sessions at the Maitland Recreation Centre, Sunday bingo at the Columbus Centre, and a Super Bowl watch party at Boston Pizza Goderich.
