On April 8, 2024, Canadians will have the unique opportunity to witness a total solar eclipse, an event not to be repeated in Eastern Canada until 2079.

This celestial spectacle, where the Moon obscures the Sun, will be visible in the afternoon across Southern Ontario, Quebec, and the Atlantic provinces.

While Toronto is not in the path of totality, the city will see 99.93% obscuration. The partial eclise begins at 2:04 p.m. and end at 4:32 p.m.

If you are looking for solar eclipse viewing glasses, the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Toronto has partnered with Toronto Public Library to distribute free eclipse viewing glasses.

The special glasses will be available at the circulation desk of any Toronto Public Library branch starting today, and at the University of Toronto’s Gerstein Library on weekdays.

The Dunlap Institute has already distributed over 250,000 eclipse glasses across Eastern Canada.

Additionally, the TPL is hosting a variety of eclipse-related workshops in collaboration with Dunlap, where participants can learn about solar viewing and make their own pinhole viewers, all while receiving a pair of eclipse glasses to take home.

Given the limited supply and the approaching date of the eclipse, those interested are advised to secure their glasses as soon as possible.
