Service Canada has launched an online Passport Application Status Checker.

With this new digital service option, Canadians who have recently applied for a passport can check the status of their application with just a few clicks and some basic information. The government says this will save applicants from waiting on the phone for a long time to get the status of their application.
The online Passport Application Status Checker is available for those who have submitted their passport application in person or by mail in Canada, or by mail from the United States. The status of applications is updated daily, and the status of the application is available after 5 business days for in-person applications and 10 business days for mail applications.
The online tool requires your file number to access. However, if you applied for your passport at specific Service Canada Centres, such as Barrie, St. John’s, Glace Bay, Sydney, Kitchener, and Sydney North Service Canada Centres, you may not be able to use the online tool at the moment.
Service Canada website states that these locations are using a new and improved system to process passport applications faster, and that the government is currently working on integrating this new system with the online passport application status checker. Until this integration is complete, you have to contact Services Canada via phone or in person.
The service delivery standard is to process in-person passport applications received at a specialized passport office within 10 days and 20 days for applications received by mail or dropped off at a Service Canada Centre. According to the news release, due to additional staffing, increased overtime, and improved efficiency, Service Canada has achieved a 96% and 98% rate for complete applications within the 10- and 20-day targets, respectively.
