September 19th will be a one-time federal holiday, a National Day of Mourning, which means that coming Monday will be a holiday for federal employees.

September 19th will not be an automatic holiday for federally regulated workers as Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan, later clarified on Twitter, that Monday will be designated a holiday for the public service of Canada.

Seamus O’Regan said, “September 19, 2022 will be a holiday for federal government employees. It will be a day of mourning for the passing of Her Majesty Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada. Federally regulated employers are welcomed to follow suit, but they are not required to do so.”

This means individual organizations under federally regulated industries like banks, post offices and crown corporations will have to declare Sept. 19th, a holiday.

According to the news release, the federal government has consulted the provinces and territories, who will determine an appropriate way to mourn Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in their jurisdictions.

British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia have announced that September 19th will be a one-time provincial holiday with government offices and schools closed.

It will be a statutory holiday on PEI.

Ontario’s Doug Ford says Monday will be a provincial Day of Mourning in lieu of a provincial holiday.

It will not be a holiday in Quebec and the province honour the late Queen with a day of commemoration.

Manitoba has declared a provincial day of mourning with all non-essential government services and offices closed for the day, but schools will remain open with classes in session.

Saskatchewan has proclaimed Monday as a day in tribute and commemorating Queen Elizabeth II, but it has not been designated as a provincial public holiday.

There will be a commemorative ceremony in Ottawa on Sept. 19th which will include a service in Christ Church Cathedral, a memorial parade consisting of the Canadian Armed Forces and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, a gun salute of 1 round per year of life, and a fly-past over Parliament Hill and Christ Church Cathedral by Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18s in the missing man formation.

Errata: The article previously mentioned that it will be a federal holiday for federally regulated industries like banks, post offices and crown corporations.
