More Things to Do: Ideas For Valentine’s Day Celebrations in Calgary
Curling on St. Patrick’s Island
You can participate in free curling on St. Patrick’s Island. Take a walk or drive down to the Island and zoo area for your Valentine’s or Galentine’s date, invite a few friends, and take advantage of trying this classic Canadian pastime for free.
Where: Confluence Plaza on St. Patrick’s Island – 1300 Zoo Rd NE
Skating in Downtown Calgary
A trip to Olympic Plaza for an ice skating date will look a bit different in February. The artistic LED displays, along with year-round lighting, make the rink a colourful and bright place to be for the evening of Valentine’s Day.
Or you can head to Bowness Park or North Glenmore Park for skating on the Ice trail, offering magnificent views for your date, any time of day.
An Indoor Stroll through the Devonian Gardens
If you’re planning for a picnic or simple walk to get out of the house on Valentine’s Day, you do have the option to keep it all indoors. Downtown Calgary’s Devonian Gardens are a beautiful way to escape the noise of the city, the harsh winter winds, or any winter weather you want to avoid. And all along your walk, you can discover the unique flora and fauna which decorate the gardens, find photo opportunities, and stop for a quick snack.
Where: 400, 317 7 Ave. S.W (4 floor in the CORE Shopping Centre)
Try Crokicurl at Two Calgary Parks
All you need for a game of crokicurl is a group of people who are willing to have fun outside in the cold! This is a great free group date option for Valentine’s Day, even for first-time-crokicurlers. The activity combines the tabletop game of crokinole with the on-ice sport of curling to create a fun and relaxing outdoor activity. You’ll need to book your time on the ice in advance with the City of Calgary, but the curling rocks which you need for the game are provided for free with your reservation.
Where: Bowness Park 8900 48 Ave. N.W.
North Glenmore Park 7305 Crowchild Tr. S.W.
Build a Romantic Picnic around the Fire
A winter picnic simply would not be complete without a toasty fire around which you and your date can either cook, warm up, or both. You can pack up everything at home, including a thermos with a hot drink, and enjoy the sites of winter together: you can watch for wildlife, discover the city’s winter trails, or fuel up for an afternoon of skating, skiing, or crokicurl! There are several Calgary parks which also permit alcohol consumption, so you and your date can responsibly enjoy some wine with your romantic meal, too, or a shot of Bailey’s in your coffee/hot chocolate.
Cross-country skiing
The areas west of Calgary are abundant with groomed and maintained cross-country ski trails. However, for a more convenient Valentine’s Day or weekend outing, you may want to consider some closer cross-country ski trails. Not to worry!; Calgary has many within the city.
- The East Village’s 1km Nordic Loop is great for beginners and gives skiers the scenery of Fort Calgary with the Bow River. This is a nice and central option, too, for skiers all over Calgary.
- North Glenmore Park has three officially maintained cross country ski trails which follow the Reservoir shoreline, and the Elbow River.
Discover Calgary’s Nearest Provincial Parks
Those in Calgary are often considered lucky for their proximity to the mountains, and all the recreation which goes along with the region. Take advantage of Calgary’s beautiful scenery and location this Valentine’s Day and take your date on a scenic drive. Sometimes, a drive in the country is all you need to connect, catch up, and enjoy nature together. These Provincial Parks and Areas are all withing 30-45 minutes of central Calgary, and offer places to explore on foot, on skis, or on fat tire bikes.
- Glenbow Ranch PP is on the west edge of Calgary, and offers an extensive trail system for hikers.
- Brown Lowrey PP is one of the smaller parks west of Calgary, but offers amenities like parking and washrooms, and trails leading to views which stretch east and west.
- Big Hill Springs PP, north of the Glenbow Ranch, offers a looping trail through forested areas; these trails lead to various viewpoints.
A Chinook Blast Art Walk
The Chinook Blast winter festival will be hosting enough temporary public art to fill a few hours worth of walking and viewing. And if you visit on the Saturday before Valentine’s Day (we can’t all celebrate on the 14th after all!), you can catch roaming performers up and down Stephen Avenue. Even if you can’t visit on the 11th, Stephen Avenue and Olympic Plaza will have artistic exhibits displayed all month-long. Some of the highlights include: The Tunnel, The Orb, or the entries from the Winter City Design Competition. This is also an excellent chance to check out Calgary’s permanent downtown art.
Where: Olympic Plaza and down Stephen Avenue.
Winter Walk through Fish Creek Provincial Park
There’s no better time to ask your partner those hard hitting questions – like do you like pineapple on pizza – than when you’re going for a walk in nature. Let the calming winter scene at Fish Creek Provincial Park unfold before you as you get to know each other on a beautiful stroll.
Check Out the Night Lights
Prepare hot chocolate at home and pack it in a thermos (or if you want to spend, get it from one of the participating locations of YYC Hot Chocolate Festival) and drive around to see some of the fantastic art displays that light up the night. From the lit-up Reconciliation Bridge to artworks like Chinook Arc, there is plenty to see.
Calgary Views From a Scenic Point
Make this Valentine’s Day unforgettable by capturing memories together at some of Calgary’s breathtaking viewpoints. Capture moments with your loved one while enjoying the natural beauty of the Bow River from Prince’s Island Park, or visit Tom Campbell’s Hill and other locations for a scenic view of the city skyline.
