Angus Reid Poll: Ford, Kenney, Stefanson Have the Lowest Ratings as Premiers

Angus Reid has published their quarterly Premiers’ approval rating results based on the online survey which was conducted from Jan. 7 – 12, 2022. The survey was conducted among a randomized sample of 5,002 Canadian adults who are members of Angus Reid Forum.

The poll finds that Ontario Premier Doug Ford is down six more points with fewer than one-in-three (30%) Ontarians approving of him. The approval ratings come as Ontario is heading to the polls this summer.

The provincial election is also scheduled for Quebec this year, but Premier François Legault enjoys the support of a majority of residents. His support has remained consistent over the past two years with him enjoying the support of 55 percent of Quebecers.

Though one of the most unpopular premiers, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney’s popularity has increased by four points from a low of 22 per cent in October, 2021. While Kenney gets bad marks for his handling of COVID-19, 69 per cent of Albertans say Kenney’s UCP government has done a good job distributing vaccines. Angus Reid says Albertans are also unhappy about “the disbursement of the tests, despite more tests being available to the general public than many other provinces” with only 30 per cent approving the handling of Rapid Antigen Test distribution across the province.

Premier Heather Stefanson who told Manitobans to learn to live with COVID-19 has the lowest level of approval this quarter, with only 21 per cent of residents commending her performance.

New Brunswick’s Blaine Higgs’ approval rating also suffered during the last quarter as Omicron variant caused the province to implement various measures including a lockdown. Now, only 34 per cent of New Brunswickers approve of the premier. This is his lowest total since taking office over three years ago.

Unlike the rest of the country, Saskatchewan has not introduced any indoor gathering limits or capacity restrictions to curb Omicron variant. While 59 percent of residents are not impressed by Premier Scott Moe’s handling of the pandemic, he gets an overall job rating of 45 per cent.

Nova Scotia’s Tim Houston, B.C.’s John Horgan, and Newfoundland and Labrador’s Andrew Furey all enjoy majority approval with 57, 54 and 51 per cent residents respectively in each province approving their premiers’ job performance.
