Canada’s Population Hits 41 Million

Canada’s population has hit another significant milestone, reaching 41 million people today, according to Statistics Canada’s Population Clock.

Per Statistics Canada’s statement released today, Canada’s population reached 40,769,890 inhabitants on January 1, 2024, an increase of 1,271,872 people compared with January 1, 2023.

Statistics Canada says this was the highest annual population growth rate (+3.2%) in Canada since 1957 (+3.3%).

The fertility rate in the country dropped to a historic low of 1.33 children per woman by 2022. This population growth, if solely relied on natural increase (births minus deaths), would only have increased by 1.2%.

Last year saw 471,771 permanent immigrants and 804,901 non-permanent residents added, with temporary workers and international students constituting the majority of non-permanent residents.

Statistics Canada’s Population Clock relies on real-time models based on quarterly demographic estimates. These estimates are continually updated using the latest births, deaths, and migration data. The census of population, conducted every five years, provides a snapshot of Canada’s population and characteristics, while ongoing population estimates track demographic shifts between censuses.

Canada’s population is expected to reach 50 million by 2043.
