The LEIC and University of Calgary – Department of Communication, Media and Film proudly present a documentary by Pamela Hogan and Hrafnhildur Gunnarsdóttir about the Women’s Day Off in Iceland.
When 90% of Iceland’s women walked off the job and out of their homes one morning in 1975, refusing to work, cook, or take care of the children, the country ground to a halt. Initially laughed off as a joke by many, the strike transformed the national narrative about women’s place in society. One year later Iceland passed a law outlawing gender discrimination. Five years later Iceland elected the world’s first female president. And today, Iceland is celebrated as one of the best places in the world to be a woman. There’s a famous saying, “The only thing new in the world is the history you do not know.” Told in the powerful, moving and often hilarious words of the women who created and lived that historic day, this is the true story of 12 hours that sparked a revolution.
