Bowness park is located on land donated to the City of Calgary in 1911 by John Hextall.

In olden days, there were a number of facilities in the park including swimming pool, scenic railway, the lagoon for canoeing and boating (with a fountain and central phonograph), a large dancing pavilion, a merry-go-round, train, picnic tables and shelters, swings and teeter-totters, camping sites and cabins which could be rented by the week or month . The lagoon is used extensively for skating in the winter.
