Kick off the 25/26 season in style, with a co-production between the Don Berner Big Band Foundation and the Traditional Jazz Society, celebrating the start of the jazz era and one of history’s greatest trumpet players, Louis Armstrong!
Louis Armstrong, nicknamed “Satchmo”, “Satch”, and “Pops”, was a trumpeter and vocalist at the forefront of early New Orleans Jazz. He was among the most influential figures in the history of the genre.. His career spanned five decades and several eras in the history of jazz and he received numerous accolades including the Grammy Award for Best Male Vocal Performance for Hello, Dolly! in 1965, as well as a posthumous win for the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1972.
Featuring trumpet player Joel Gray, this season opener will showcase one of Edmonton’s greatest musical treasures homaging Louis like nobody else in Canada can! This project is supported by the Edmonton Arts Council, the City of Edmonton, the Government of Alberta, and the Edmonton Downtown Business Association.
The Don Berner Big Band is the city of Edmonton’s flagship large jazz ensemble. An Edmonton jazz favourite for over a decade, the Don Berner Big Band became the first professional large jazz ensemble in Edmonton to have a fully programmed concert season in 2021. Featuring Edmonton’s best jazz musicians, the Don Berner Big Band presents an eclectic season drawing from classic big band and swing repertoire, collaborations with contemporary and pop artists, adaptations of works from other mediums, and more with a variety of special illustrious guests, all presented in Edmonton Public Library’s Muttart Theatre in Downtown Edmonton!
