Events Description

Crackup Ottawa’s 2020 theme of Celebrating Canada’s Comedic Diversity is giving heavy focus to the Chinese community by presenting “Dashan and Friends,” an evening of comedy on March 26 featuring mega-Chinese TV star Dashan (Ottawa native Mark Rowswell) and other Canadian Chinese comedians. The show will be presented in Chinese and some English. Dashan will be also honored with a Candy Award, International Canadian Comedy Star at the Festival Finale and Candy Awards on March 27. The festival is also hosting Laugh Out Proud on March 25, a comedy show with some of Canada’s top LGBTQ+ comics. March will also be “Crackup Diversity Month at Yuk Yuk’s Ottawa and every Tuesday will feature a diverse mix of Ottawa’s outstanding Comedy Community.

The Festival Finale and Candy Awards will be hosted by the host of CBC’s Laugh Out Loud and moderator of the “Canada Reads” competition, Ali Hassan. Candy Awards will be given out to Dashan (Mark Rowswell), Rick Mercer and the TV show Kim’s Convenience (Cast members Andrew Phung and Nicole Power), and several Canadian comedians will perform, Don Kelly, Fangzhou He and Kyle Brownrigg. About the fundraiser: To ensure the highest standard of accountability, the fundraiser recruited a team of dedicated volunteers in charge of every aspect of the relief efforts — fundraising, accounting, procurement, transportation and communications. It established direct contact with four hospitals in Wuhan, namely, Wuhan University Zhongnan Hospital, Wuhan University Renmin Hospital, Wuhan No. 4 Hospital and the Children’s Hospital of Wuhan. It confirms with the hospitals that the medical supplies to be purchased meet the needs of the frontline healthcare workers. The fundraiser accounts for the prompt procurement and transportation of medical supplies directly to the hospitals through tested and proved logistical channels. It reports the fundraising progress every week via social media platforms such as Facebook, GoFundMe, Twitter, the CFC website and Health Times.
