Events Description
WALL SPACE GALLERY is proud to present Dominique Normand’s solo exhibition, “EXODUS: The dawn of new beginnings”. Normand bridges the realms between abstraction and figuration across large-scale acrylic paintings and intimate monotypes. After years of exploring her own Metis roots and celebrating the spirit and wilderness of the Canadian North, Normand merges her past with influences from the living culture of Indigenous peoples of South America and the spirits of Ecuador’s Sierra Mountains. She turns to mysticism, spirituality, and the ‘sacred feminine’ to grapple with the upheavel of her new surroundings and tides of change.
This exhibition features three symbolic paintings from Normand’s ongoing series “13 Grandmother Moons”. The 13 moons are associated with lunar cycles, which are deeply intertwined with feminine energy, intuition, and the rhythms of nature. In “TALKS WIH RELATIONS“, Normand’s canvas exudes liveliness and growth – hot yellow, blue and purple flora expand into a patterned environment across the background. This environment hosts blooming red flowers, centered on the canvas and encircled by a translucent moon-like circle. A figure, with back turned, gazes towards their rich, unfolding forms. For Normand, each moon represents a different aspect of womanhood, spirituality, or a connection to the earth.
She questions the meaning, intention, and intuition behind each painting, analyzing them from a mythical perspective. Figures in motion and abstract cartography suggest a guide through chaotic times, revealing the magic and unresolved mystery of her creative journey.
Dominique Normand (Ecuador/Quebec) – is a Canadian artist currently living in Vilcabamba, Ecuador. Her paintings are fragments of her story and the ecological worlds she visits in a passionate manner. Normand is Mi’kmaq, Maliseet, and Anishinaabe descent. She celebrates the beauty of Wilderness and its true Spirit. Her paintings speak a vibrant language; they reveal simple observations of precious moments in time and draw attention to the sacred gifts of life. Instinctively, she creates her own transformational path as a practice in living her intentions, a deep knowing of the soul leading the way.
