Events Description
A portrait of André Brassard.
From the smoky half-light emerges AB’s silhouette. The man is calcified, imprisoned in a body that no longer obeys him—but more than fifty years ago, he was the renowned stage director, teacher and director of the NAC’s French Theatre, André Brassard. The astounding Violette Chauveau—Brassard’s legendary muse—transforms into a defeated clown burning the final candle stubs of his existence as he listens to himself on his old tapes.
The incomparable Olivier Choinière does justice to his former teacher and mentor in his latest iconoclastic show by borrowing the traits of Samuel Beckett’s titular character in Krapp’s Last Tape. AB leads a tragicomic self-investigation, rifling through his old recordings to relive his past and perhaps even reignite a few sparks of the sacred fire that is, without a doubt, his greatest legacy. To paint this moving stage portrait, Choinière also dove headfirst into the bowels of the archives to tear the illustrious memory of one of our greatest theatre builders from the hands of collective amnesia.
The human broken by solitude and disability slowly gives way to the tremendously indomitable artist. Each glance and moment of silence seems to be addressed to the theatre itself, as if to ask, “How can I preserve your memory, O cruel art form to whom I have dedicated my life, whose raw materials are all that is fleeting?”
