with the NAC Orchestra

Hayata Sumino isn’t just a piano virtuoso—he also writes, records and shares his own music on YouTube, where he’s amassed more than 1.4 million fans.
Film director David Lynch was heavily influenced by Shostakovich’s 15th Symphony while making his 1986 surrealist thriller Blue Velvet.
Caroline Shaw thinks of composing for orchestra as “standing on a mountaintop, riding the subway during rush hour, and gently holding someone’s hand.”
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart infused every concert with a sense of adventure and risk-taking—especially when he performed as the soloist in his dazzling piano concertos, where he improvised all-new material while conducting from the keyboard. Hayato Sumino will bring that same sense of spontaneity to the stage when he performs Mozart’s “Coronation” Concerto with Teddy Abrams and the NAC Orchestra, applying his mesmerizing improvisational skills to the Austrian composer’s music in what promises to be an unforgettable performance.

In his 15th Symphony, Dmitri Shostakovich confronts mortality in a haunting portrait of his state of mind during a period of declining health. With a profound sense of mystery and nostalgia, Shostakovich quotes his earlier symphonies and works that inspired him over the years—including Wagner’s Ring cycle and Rossini’s William Tell Overture—before sending his final symphony into the great beyond with the ghostly sound of distant drums.

Like Shostakovich, Caroline Shaw references composers close to her heart in The Observatory, a symphonic poem in which the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer meditates on life, death, and the vast expanse of the universe.
