Events Description
Our friends from Tafelmusik return to Southam Hall for an electrifying program of Baroque music by Antonio Vivaldi and his contemporaries.
A musical powerhouse for 40 years, the Toronto-based ensemble has performed to sold-out crowds in more than 350 cities.
The Toronto Star has praised Tafelmusik for delivering “passionate music-making that people will remember for a long time.”
Travel through time to early 18th-century Europe—where the florid melodies of Baroque music filled the grandest cathedrals and palaces—when Spanish violinist Lina Tur Bonet leads Tafelmusik in an electrifying program of music by three titans of the Baroque: Antonio Vivaldi, Jan Dismas Zelenka, and Antonio Corelli.
In Vivaldi’s “Il Grosso Mogul” Concerto for solo violin and orchestra, Bonet will navigate the high-flying virtuosity required of Vivaldi’s music with “an almost punk rigour” (South German Radio), while Zelenka’s Concertante á 8 merges Tafelmusik’s strings with a trio of solo woodwinds in delicate musical conversations of ravishing beauty and grace.
And Francesco Geminiani reimagines Arcangelo Corelli’s sublime “La Folia” Violin Sonata as an exhilarating showpiece for violin and string orchestra. Featuring one of the most recognizable themes in music history—the Portuguese Folía, which can be heard across centuries of music, from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony to Britney Spears’s “Oops! … I Did It Again”—Corelli’s high-voltage showpiece is guaranteed to bring the house down.
