Events Description

Two decades have passed since the theft of the wampum, a sacred object and symbol of cohesion for the small Eastern Quebec community of Whitefish (Wapeyit-Nomehs). Today, the village is polarized by a political crisis, with two influential clans vying for power. As the promoters of the nearby mine seek to exploit the lack of consensus, not only the peace of the village is at stake, but its territorial integrity. The key to restoring harmony seems to be the recovery of the wampum. And it is Polam Nicolas who sets out to find it—reluctantly at first, but then with a determination that increases tenfold when the wampum appears to him in a dream and takes on a profound spiritual dimension linked to his family history.

Part political thriller, part quest for identity, this original creation offers a universal reflection on our inner territories and what unites us, regardless of culture or background. Tupqan (“land” in Wolastoqey) invites us to revisit our personal and collective histories in order to better understand the present. Through a fusion of artistic forms, this poetic show immerses us in a unique experience from which we emerge the richer.

Developed with support from the National Arts Centre’s National Creation Fund.
