Free Dental Care for Eligible Seniors, Under 18s, Disabled Canadians by End of 2023

Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, revealed more details about the free Canadian Dental Care Plan included in budget 2023.

The plan, which aims to provide free dental care for modest-income households, will begin by the end of 2023.

The Canadian Dental Care Plan will become available to uninsured Canadians under 18, persons with disabilities, and seniors with an annual family income of less than $90,000 this year.

There will be no co-pays for those with an annual family income under $70,000.

As originally announced, the Canadian Dental Care Plan will be fully implemented to cover all uninsured Canadians with an annual family income under $90,000 by 2025.

The budget for the plan is $13 billion over five years, beginning in 2023-24, with an additional $4.4 billion in ongoing, permanent funding.

“No one should have to choose between taking care of their teeth and paying their bills. Budget 2023 will help millions of Canadians see a dentist and provide much-needed relief for families,” said Trudeau announcing the news.

According to the news release, it will cover up to nine million Canadians.

The government previously launched the Canada Dental Benefit for children under 12 last year, which has already helped over 250,000 children across the country access dental care. The Canadian Dental Care Plan will expand on this initiative and provide more comprehensive coverage to a larger number of Canadians.

I too am not a refugee, neither native, veteran, convict nor child. As a child, the dentist in my town pulled my 4 bottom molars,no fillings, just extractions which he was not even good at and no freezing because at that time I was afraid of needles.I am a single senior age 76 now and worked full time for 42 years, but have been in just ok health since age 70, I had approximately 10+ emergency surgeries in a short period of weeks when I turned 70 and as a result of multiple intubations,my upper molars (3)were cut off at the gums, had to have another 4 teeth extracted ( with 3 roots as well) and my 4 front teeth are all cracked in numerous areas.I took care of my teeth and always had a dental plan @work but I am findng it difficult as a single woman to maintain an individual plan which covers 1 exam/year and fillings which I am way past that scene,I need caps on my teeth which would cost approx.$1200 each,I have one tooth to chew food with.I feel as a senior we are always excluded from any benefits to maintain good dental health and general health well being, perhaps the government of CANADA will now open their eyes and finally give” US” a break!!

We are in our midd 70’th and for 4 years didn’t see a dentist. We need cleaning and me I had a tooth infection and on lower part I need to fix denture that is moving and it irritated my gum and cannot eat. I called Ministry of health of Ontario to ask them when we will get some relief. No answer yet.

Is there enough dentists and Clinics to receive an avalanche of patients under this Wonderful Benefit. Actually there programs for Seniors in Ontario but there is a big waiting list.
Make it real before is unreal, only in propaganda

Apparently the new dental programme for seniors is supposed to be “rolled out” by the end of 2023. I agree that it would be helpful if the government provided a few more details. If it is true I expect we should be notified reasonably soon.

I am 83 years old. At the end of July I can no longer get dental treatment through the provincial dental program for seniors. I was only $45 over the 22,200 and considered not eligible. What a shame. Doug Ford please do something about this……

So, yeah, mention the amount seniors over 65 will be reimbursed for dental work. If it cost 650.00$, how much would the “patient” receive as a reimbursement? If the patient only receives 20,000$ as Net Income, would the “dental patient” get back 90% of the 650.00$ cost? If that patient receives 50,000$ as Net Income, would that “dental patient” get back, let’s say, 50% of the 650.00$ cost for dental repairs? Let’s see the numbers because it seems that the whole message you’re sending sounds a tad confusing, to say the least.

Patricia Anne Stephens: Would you kindly clarify what you’re referring to? Ineligible for what? Are you referring to the Canadian Dental Care Plan for seniors?

As a low- income senior I’ve been waiting almost three years to see a dentist in the mean time I had to have two teeth pulled at a cost of 700.00 dollars. Yesterday I receive a letter that I am now ineligible. My net income for 2022 is less than what is expected by the policy. It sounds like a great plan but you wait and wait.

I had no choice but to get my last 4 teeth pulled out this month. I’m 70 in September. I tried to wait ,but my teeth were quite loose .I was afraid of abscesses. Had that happen before , not fun. So I need dentures ,my top dentures are 40 years old with a few sharp chips in a couple of the teeth. My bottom partial is no good to me any more . I too am a widow on pension .

I will qualify based on age and income whenever the seniors coverage kicks in. Does anyone know any specifics yet on what likely will be covered. I have a set of full dentures that are excellent in appearance but lousy in terms of the fit. Uppers are fine and likely always will be but bone loss makes a decent fit a real challenge. I’ve needed plenty of adhesive since day one and lost more of the bone in the 16 years since I got them. The only fix is a couple implants. It’s very unlikely coverage will include implants but one never knows. So it would be great if anyone knows where coverage details are or will be at some point. Thx

It is appalling that a rich country like Canada has so many seniors with rotten teeth because they can’t afford dental care.

Will begin by end of 2023 but not fully implemented til 2025. 😢 as a senior who got kicked off the Ontario free dental care for poor seniors when my annual income was slightly higher than the cut off 22,500 I thought this might be a solution to a tooth problem , but it can’t wait much longer

When is this plan supposed to be available? Do you need to see specific dentist? What would be the annual allowed amount of coverage, and how would it be paid? We all need clarification, as my dentist can’t even answer my questions.

Where is it clearly identified what seniors are covered for or how they qualify? I can’t see what’s changed for seniors. It continues to mention ‘family income’ of less than $70,000.

I’m not a refuge, or a native, or a child, or a veteran, or a convict. I’m a pensioner living on $1142.00 a month. I need dentures in a bad way. There isn’t much I can eat without pain. There’s no way I can afford them. When is the universal dental plan happening? If I manage to get the work done now can I get that money back?
