COMO LAKE PARK
This extremely popular park is always a great destination for children and parents. With a lovely one-kilometer walking trail that circumnavigates the lake, the park also offers an opportunity for kids 16 and under to fish without a licence from the two floating docks. Please note though, that it is only catch and release. A playground is available, and several picnic spots. This is designated migration lake, so for those kids who like birdwatching, this is a fantastic destination.
On a hot day this might be the perfect excursion for the family. Kids will burn up energy along the easy 6.5-kilometer hike along the Upper Coquitlam River to the falls themselves. Be prepared for a dip in the river or a dip in the canyon above the falls. The river is shallow and the cool water is a nice treat after hiking. Take a picnic and make it a full day outing. You need at least two hours to complete this activity, more if you are going to swim or picnic.
TOWNE CENTER PARK
Named the “Best Public Space” in 2017, this park has everything your kids need to keep busy all day long. Along with a BMX jump park, kids can have fun in the skateboard bowl, spray park, and playground. Hike around LaFarge Lake or go fishing off the pier for rainbow trout. Find baseball diamonds, tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, and much more within this park.
This garden area is “dedicated to growing, developing and supporting gardeners in the community” and is an excellent place to stop to let kids learn a little about plants and flowers. Everything is well marked, so even if you don’t know a lot about plants yourself, your kids will still enjoy seeing the names of each one. Everything from fruit trees to herbs to petunias are showcased here, and your family will enjoy the quiet time among the plants. During the summer kids gardening programs are available.
CITY CENTER AQUATIC COMPLEX
Take your kids to “Florida” when you visit this themed pool. Featuring a tropical lagoon play area with a wave pool, a lazy river, a long waterslide, a bubble pool, interactive water toys, diving boards, a rope swing and a mini zip line, this aquatic center will give your water loving kids enough to do for an afternoon. For those who want to practice their swim strokes, there is also an Olympic sized swimming pool to enjoy. Relax at the end of your swim in the hot tub or sauna.

MINNEKHADA REGIONAL PARK
This area offers so many outdoor activities it is amazing, so scoop up your kids and head out to the beautiful Minnekhada Regional Park, where your family can enjoy the spectacular views and hiking trails. There are five different trails available, so families can choose the ones most appropriate for their children’s hiking level. If you are hiking in the area, please be bear aware, as there are black bears frequently in this park.
COQUITLAM CRUNCH TRAIL
For the hard-core kids that love to hike, this is a great medium level challenge trail that takes you on an urban walk. Keep in mind that this trail is purely for exercise as the views are obstructed by power lines. Make sure your kids are prepared with appropriate walking shoes, water and snacks. The 4.5 kilometer round trip hike takes about an hour and a half in total if they walk at a good pace.
PINECONE BURKE PROVINCIAL PARK
A huge provincial park that offers numerous hiking trails, this can be a good destination for a day’s getaway or for overnight camping trips with the kids. There are designated, first come first serve, backcountry campsites along many of these trails. If your kids are into canoeing, take a spin on Pitt Lake, or paddle over to the Widgeon Creek Campsite to camp for the night. You can canoe, boat and kayak on Pitt Lake, Widgeon Slough and Widgeon Creek. Kids can fish in Pitt Lake, but keep in mind that licences are needed to fish here.

Families will find this a perfect day out on a nice day in Coquitlam. This is an easy trail that is about 8 kilometers round trip walk that takes about 3 hours in total. The destination is Sawblade Falls, which your kids will love. Don’t be put off by the sounds of gunshots, they are coming from the nearby Port Coquitlam District Hunting and Fishing Club and the farther away you get the less you will hear them. Be bear aware in this area.
