This extremely popular park is always a great destination for children and parents. With a lovely one-kilometer walking trail that circumnavigates the lake, the park also offers an opportunity for kids 16 and under to fish without a licence from the two floating docks. Please note though, that it is only catch and release. A playground is available, and several picnic spots. This is designated migration lake, so for those kids who like birdwatching, this is a fantastic destination.

CRYSTAL FALLS
On a hot day this might be the perfect excursion for the family. Kids will burn up energy along the easy 6.5-kilometer hike along the Upper Coquitlam River to the falls themselves. Be prepared for a dip in the river or a dip in the canyon above the falls. The river is shallow and the cool water is a nice treat after hiking. Take a picnic and make it a full day outing. You need at least two hours to complete this activity, more if you are going to swim or picnic.

For the hard-core kids that love to hike, this is a great medium level challenge trail that takes you on an urban walk. The 4.5 kilometer round trip hike takes about an hour and a half in total if they walk at a good pace.

PINECONE BURKE PROVINCIAL PARK
A huge provincial park that offers numerous hiking trails, this can be a good destination for a day’s getaway or for overnight camping trips with the kids. There are designated, first come first serve, backcountry campsites along many of these trails. If your kids are into canoeing, take a spin on Pitt Lake, or paddle over to the Widgeon Creek Campsite to camp for the night. You can canoe, boat and kayak on Pitt Lake, Widgeon Slough and Widgeon Creek. Kids can fish in Pitt Lake, but keep in mind that licences are needed to fish here.

Families will find this a perfect day out on a nice day in Coquitlam. This is an easy trail that is about 8 kilometers round trip walk that takes about 3 hours in total. The destination is Sawblade Falls, which your kids will love. Don’t be put off by the sounds of gunshots, they are coming from the nearby Port Coquitlam District Hunting and Fishing Club and the farther away you get the less you will hear them. Be bear aware in this area.
