The league announced Wednesday that both Hamilton and Las Vegas will join as expansion teams, bringing the total number of clubs to 11. Hamilton’s team will play at TD Coliseum, while Las Vegas will be based at T-Mobile Arena.
Per the news release, when the league stopped in the city during its Takeover Tour on January 3, a crowd of 16,012 filled TD Coliseum. That turnout ranked as the third-largest of the tour and sits among the top 20 attendances in league history. Notably, more than 70 percent of those ticket buyers were attending their first PWHL game.
The league sees Hamilton as part of a broader hockey hotbed. The Greater Golden Horseshoe region accounts for more than 15 percent of current PWHL players, reflecting a deep pipeline in girls’ and women’s hockey. Its location, within reach of Waterloo Region, Niagara, and London, adds to its appeal as a regional hub.
Hamilton joins Detroit and Las Vegas as part of the league’s 2026 expansion class, alongside existing teams in cities like Montréal, Toronto, and New York. Details on how new teams will build their rosters and enter the 2026 draft are expected soon.
The new Hamilton team will wear gold, maroon, and cream. Gold nods to the city’s football and hockey history, while maroon reflects its steel industry roots.
The timing adds to a busy moment for hockey in the city. The American Hockey League is also set to arrive, with the New York Islanders planning to relocate its affiliate to Hamilton for the same 2026–27 season, signalling what the organization calls a new era of sports and entertainment.
Meanwhile, the league’s current season is still unfolding. The 2026 Walter Cup Final is underway between the Ottawa Charge and the Montreal Victoire.
PWHL Hamilton merchandise is now available online.
A team name and logo are still to come.
