Manitoba is hosting an open house to discuss plans for a proposed provincial park in the forest, located in the city’s St. Norbert neighbourhood. Mike Moyes announced the public session, saying the province wants to hear directly from Manitobans as planning moves forward.

“We are excited to hear from Manitobans about the future of the Lemay Forest and creating a green space the whole community can enjoy,” Moyes said. He added that protecting the site aligns with Manitoba’s Path to Net Zero and the province’s goal of safeguarding more natural landscapes by 2030.

Lemay Forest covers 22.5 acres of public land in south Winnipeg. Beyond its trees and wildlife, the area also carries Indigenous cultural significance and historical value. Provincial officials say turning it into a park would help preserve those elements while protecting an environmentally sensitive space within an urban setting.

The province signalled its intention last April by committing to designate the forest as a provincial park.

Since then, a steering committee comprising rights holders, stakeholders and partners has been formed to guide the planning process. The group’s role is to share knowledge, consider different perspectives and work toward a common vision for what the park could become. Their input will help shape a formal park proposal that will later be shared more widely with the public.

The upcoming open house will be held on Thursday, March 19, at the St. Norbert Community Centre. People can drop in between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Officials say the session is an early step toward establishing a provincial park at Lemay Forest.
