These ice roads which are built on frozen lakes and land connects over 30,000 Manitobans in 22 communities and make it easier to travel and bring in supplies cheaply. Most of these communities are only accessible by air once the ice thaws.

The 2,375-kilometre long winter road system crosses muskeg, streams, rivers and lakes and provides residents with temporary inter-community travel, as well as road access to the rest of the province.

These winter roads see over 2,500 shipments of goods annually including fuel, construction materials, heavy equipment and store supplies.

The winter roads are typically open until mid-March, depending on weather conditions.
