Northern Ontario’s First Novel Coronavirus Case Reported in Sudbury, Total in Canada 97

Dr. Penny Sutcliffe, Medical Officer of Health with Public Health Sudbury & Districts confirmed the first positive case of COVID-19 in the Sudbury and Manitoulin districts in a male in his 50s who was seen by the emergency department at Health Sciences North on March 7, 2020.

 

Sudbury man attended the PDAC (Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada) 2020 convention in Toronto on March 2 and 3. Public Health Sudbury & Districts is actively engaged in follow up and is collaborating with the Ministry of Health and the local health system. According to the PDAC website, there were over 1,100 exhibitors, 2,500 investors and 25,800 attendees from 132 countries at the conference that was held from March 1 to 4.

Dr. Penny Sutcliffe said, “Having a confirmed case in our area is not unexpected given the transmission of this virus around the world. Although this is concerning, as a community and as a health system, we have been preparing for COVID-19. Our focus is on breaking the chain of transmission to limit the spread of infection and as a precautionary measure, we are asking those who attended PDAC 2020 to monitor for symptoms for 14 days.”

Dr. Sutcliffe is asking anyone who attended PDAC 2020 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre last week to monitor themselves for symptoms for 14 days.

Currently, in Ontario, there are 112 cases under investigation with the total number of patients approved for COVID-19 testing to date at 2747. Of these, 37 were tested positive and 5 cases completely resolved.

Current Scenario in Canada

Currently in Canada, the total positive COVID-19 cases stand at 97, with 39 cases in British Columbia, 14 in Alberta, 37 in Ontario and 7 in Quebec. Of these 96, 9 cases, 4 in B.C. and 5 in Ontario were fully resolved, with each of those patients having two consecutive negative tests at least 24 hours apart.

British Columbia recorded Canada’s first fatality from COVID-19.
