These Are the New Travel Restrictions in Effect For 2021-22 Holiday Season in PEI

Prince Edward Island has announced new precautionary and temporary measures to mitigate the spread of the new COVID-19 variant of concern, Omicron.

Starting today (December 3), the following measures will be in place until early January:

  • Anyone arriving in PEI from an international destination (including the United States) must be tested at the point of entry on arrival and again on day 4. Those who travelled internationally and do not get tested on day 4 will be subject to enforcement measures, including fines.
  • Any individuals who return from international travel will be unable to enter long-term care or community care facility in PEI until they have had three negative COVID-19 tests on days 0, 4 and 8. This applies to all staff, volunteers and visitors.
  • Children under the age of 12 years will be unable to travel interprovincially for the purpose of participating in sports tournaments or arts and culture events.
  • PEI cannot host interprovincial tournaments and arts and culture events for children under 12 years of age. Provincial tournaments (within PEI) and arts and culture activities are permitted, as are provincial and interprovincial sports tournaments for those 12 years of age and older.
  • PEI children under the age of 12 years can attend out-of-province tournaments and arts and culture events as spectators but they may not participate in those events.

The province says these measures will be re-evaluated in January.

Holiday Guidelines:

PEI also published guidance for holidays yesterday.

While proof-of-vaccination is not required for personal gatherings, holiday gatherings and parties are limited to a maximum of 50 people.

Proof-of-vaccination is required for workplace Christmas and holiday parties as these are considered organized gatherings.

If you are taking children for Santa Claus photos at markets, malls, and other retail operations, Santa and participants should maintain physical distancing and wear non-medical masks. Physical distancing must also be maintained in line-ups to meet Santa.

PCT Test:

PEI is also asking those who are travelling and require a PCR test to plan ahead and keep statutory holidays in mind. The province will not email test result reports for travel on December 25th (Christmas Day). Reports will be available on December 26th if the submission is received before 12:00 pm on December 24th and on January 1st if the submission is received before 12:00 pm on December 31st.
