Toronto’s Free Indigenous Arts Festival & Na-Me-Res Pow Wow Takes Over Fort York This Weekend

Visit Fort York National Historic Site this weekend to experience and celebrate traditional and contemporary Indigenous music and dance, along with artisanal and culinary experiences from First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples living across Turtle Island and Indigenous communities worldwide.

Native Men’s Residence Traditional Pow Wow

The Indigenous Arts Festival will run on June 19th and 20th and is centred around the Seven Grandfather Teachings and takes place across the Fort York grounds.

 

Throughout both days, attendees can browse an outdoor artisans market featuring handcrafted jewelry, beadwork, garments, and artworks. A curated food market by Chef Christopher Britt of Wiisinidaaa will offer Indigenous cuisine.

Highlights on Friday include storytelling by Grandmother Kim Wheatley, stencil flag-making with Red Pepper Spectacle Arts, lacrosse demonstrations led by Daniel Henhawk and Six Nations players, guided history tours, and an interactive dance session with Australian performer Goombine. A curated short film series by the ImagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival will be screened throughout the day.

Live performances begin Friday evening at 5 p.m. with singer James Wilson and continue with DJ Shub at 7 p.m., presented by TKMF Productions.

Native Men’s Residence Traditional Pow Wow

One of the highlights of the event, the Native Men’s Residence Traditional Pow Wow will be held on Saturday.

The event starts with the Grand Entry at noon, led by host Steve Teekens and features flag songs, veteran honours, and dance exhibitions. The Pow Wow concludes at 4 p.m. Visitors are reminded to observe etiquette on sacred grounds, including photo permissions and respectful behaviour.

 

The festival concludes with a Saturday evening concert from 5 to 9 p.m. Performers include Amanda Rheaume, The North Sound, Desiree Dorion, and Snotty Nose Rez Kids, continuing the celebration of Indigenous music and culture into the night.

All events take place rain or shine at Fort York and Garrison Common and are free on both days
