The event, part of a tradition since 1957, drew a significant crowd to Bluewater Park, beginning with fireworks at 7 a.m. and culminating in Willie’s eagerly awaited prediction at 8:07 a.m.
The South Bruce Peninsula Mayor, Jay Kirkland, shared Willie’s forecast with the audience, marking the end of the weekend festivities.
The Wiarton Willie Festival, renowned for its vibrant activities, including gaming trailers, human foosball, and various food and craft markets, brings together the community and visitors.
The festival’s rich history dates back to a humorous invitation by local Mac McKenzie, which unexpectedly caught the interest of a Toronto Daily Star reporter, leading to the establishment of this unique Canadian Groundhog Day celebration.
The event, now a highlight of the winter season in Wiarton, supports local causes and promotes community engagement through its diverse offerings, from chilli cook-offs to public skating events with local celebrities.
Wiarton Willie stands among Canada’s eclectic mix of seasonal forecasters, sharing the spotlight with others like Fred the Marmot and Shubenacadie Sam, who all disagreed with Willie in their predictions.
