Spring Snake Viewing: Witness the Spectacle of Garter Snakes Mating Balls at Narcisse Snake Dens

Looking for an adventure with Mom for Mother’s Day? Plan a trip to Narcisse Snake Dens in Manitoba.

Located just 30 minutes west of Gimli, this Wildlife Management Area is home to the world-famous red-sided garter snakes, with more of these slithery creatures than you could imagine in one place.

These are no ordinary snake pits – the Narcisse Snake Den boasts the largest concentration of red-sided garter snakes in the world, with caverns formed from water-worn limestone bedrock.

During spring, tens of thousands of these snakes emerge from their winter dens and begin their annual mating ritual. Visitors can witness the spectacle of one female snake surrounded by up to 100 males, forming what’s known as a “mating ball.”

Did you know adult females are larger than adult males in length and body thickness?

If you’re feeling brave, you can even handle the snakes (with on-site volunteers present). Volunteers will be on-site until the Victoria Day long weekend.

In addition to the snakes, you can also enjoy the native wildflowers and birds on site while hiking the 3-kilometre self-guided interpretive trail. And the best part? There’s no fee to visit – it’s free for the whole family to enjoy.

It’s a unique opportunity to witness these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat and get up close and personal with them, all while enjoying the beauty of the Manitoba wilderness.

If you cannot go this year but would love to visit in the future, check the activity level of the snake dens before you go. Spring, particularly May (weather dependent), is the best time to see the snakes in action.
