Calgary
Events Description
The concert celebrates the 50th anniversaries of two composers: Vincent Ho, who was born in 1975, and Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 – 1975). Principal Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra percussionist Chris Sies is the featured soloist in Vincent Ho’s The Shaman – Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra. The work was commissioned by the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Manitoba Arts Council and Dame Evelyn Glennie. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 12 “The Year 1917”, composed in 1961, commemorates the Russian Revolution, and is in the tradition of a folk heroic epic.
