Events Description
The Edmonton Movie Club (EMC), established in 2012 with the mission of “Bridging Cultures through Cinema,” initiated the India Film Festival of Alberta (IFFA) in the summer of 2015 to spotlight films by independent filmmakers from India and Canada, as well as by smaller film industries within India. This festival has consistently showcased films from a diverse array of languages and cultures (ranging from eight to twelve each year), presenting a rich tapestry of stories annually. Moreover, it has facilitated engaging interactions between audiences and film creators through Q&A sessions, panel discussions, and master classes, fostering a deeper appreciation of cinematic arts.
To enhance the cultural experience, EMC has partnered with local cultural organizations and artists, incorporating song and dance performances, as well as food festivals, into the event. This collaboration culminates in a grand celebration of Indian culture, making IFFA a vibrant and multi-faceted festival. As IFFA marks its 10th anniversary this year, EMC has orchestrated an extraordinary event, set to deliver an unforgettable and enticing experience for all attendees.
IFFA 2025 Theme: Spotlight on Northeast India
Each year, the India Film Festival of Alberta (IFFA) embraces a distinct theme, celebrating diverse cinematic landscapes and cultural narratives. This year, IFFA presents a theme never explored before — shining a spotlight on Northeast India and the vibrant “Seven Sister States.” By highlighting the region’s rich storytelling, artistic heritage, and cinematic excellence, the festival brings a fresh and unique perspective to audiences.
Each element in this year’s theme artwork is carefully illustrated to represent the essence of Northeast India: its people, landscapes, and cultural identity. The image is not just a visual backdrop, but a tribute to the icons, freedom fighters, artists, and cultural leaders who have shaped the region’s legacy. It brings together real faces and regional symbols that reflect the heart and soul of the “Seven Sister States.” This artwork serves as a visual celebration of IFFA 2025’s focus, bringing Northeast Indian stories to the center stage in Alberta.
