Events Description
Join international trumpet virtuoso Jens Lindemann, and renowned Canadian pianist Ian Parker in celebration of the 100-year anniversary of George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” which debuted on February 12, 1924, at the Aeolian in New York City.
This once-in-a-century concert will feature the famed Steinway “Rhapsody in Blue” piano from the National Music Centre collection. One of only 24 models ever made, the piano was built in 1998 to commemorate American pianist and composer George Gershwin’s centennial, making this a unique performance experience of its kind in North America.
The evening will feature an all star cast of JUNO Award-winners from across Canada performing Oscar Peterson’s iconic ‘Canadiana Suite’, an eight movement musical portrait of the country going from East to West, including Oscar’s homage to the Calgary Stampede. This will be followed by an epic big band rendition of “Rhapsody in Blue” with some of Alberta’s celebrated jazz musicians, including Al Muirhead, Audrey Ochoa, Eric Friedenberg, Joel Gray, and more.
George Gershwin brought together influences of early jazz, classical and even Klezmer music to create a universally beloved melodic harmony. Join us for this extraordinary international event as we recreate the magic of the debut of Gershwin’s spectacular Rhapsody In Blue performed by Canada’s finest musicians.
