Join AWA and the Whitebark Pine Ecosystem Foundation of Canada at Plateau Mountain to explore Alberta’s endangered whitebark pines and their ongoing restoration work.
Are you ready for an unforgettable shortcut to one of the most unique spots in K-Country? Participants will find out about this unique and fragile place, and discover what makes whitebark pine so extraordinary. Get up close and learn how to identify threats facing this iconic species and gain insights into the collaborative efforts underway in Alberta and across Canada to restore and protect these vital ecosystems.
This will be a leisurely ramble around the west side of Plateau Mountain Ecological Reserve, immersing ourselves in the beauty and fragility of this remarkable environment. We’ll discuss the challenges facing Alberta’s endangered whitebark pine, learn to identify key threats, and explore ongoing recovery efforts.
After lunch, we will have the opportunity to split up, either on a short walk to learn more about the pines, or to hike another 3-4 kilometres and undertake some stewardship reporting work with AWA. Plateau Mountain was designated an Ecological Reserve in 1991 and for many years, AWA has been a volunteer steward of the area. Every year we visit the area to report on the status of the land and its inhabitants. We’ll meet back at approximately 3 pm at the vehicles.
Plateau Mountain is a prominent landmark in south western Alberta between the Livingstone Range to the west and the prairie to the east. It is a genuine plateau that stood above the ice sheet during the last ice age. Its broad wind-swept summit hosts some unusual wildflowers and geological features. It provides important grazing for a number of wildlife species. It is a unique place.
