Events Description

In our secular and religious traditions, November is a time for remembrance and reverence. Since the guns were finally silenced at that eleventh hour of that eleventh day of that eleventh month in 1918, we have paused every November to reflect on the futility of war and the fragility of peace. We honour the sacrifice of lives lost in war, and contemplate the moral burden of taking up their torch. For centuries, November has been the month to remember and pray for the dead, since it begins with both All Saints’ and All Souls’ days and concludes with the season of Advent, a time to reflect on our own mortality.

It is in this spirit of contemplation and commemoration that A Joyful Noise opens our 20th anniversary season. The music we present in this concert explores the complexities and facets of remembrance: fond remembrance of times past; honour for those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country and beliefs; wistfulness at our own preparedness for death; hope for brighter tomorrows; and an impassioned cry for peace.
