Events Description

Created and curated by JUNO Winner Quique Escamilla, Tlalli Festival is a celebration of live Indigenous music, dance, and ancient culinary traditions. It is dedicated to honouring and celebrating a multi- millenary-old connection among Indigenous Peoples from across the Americas: from First Nations in Canada, Inca in Peru, Aztec in Mexico, Guarani in Brazil, Taino in the Caribbean Islands…to many more and beyond.

This year, Escamilla has gathered a great, diverse lineup, including Lara Klaus from Brazil, JD Crosstown from Neyaashiinigmiing First Nations, Soukustek from Colombia, Popkorn Trini from Trinidad & Tobago, Moneka Arabic Jazz from Iraq, Goombine from the Yuin Nation in Australia, and Indigenous dance groups such as Tribal Vision from First Nations, and the Mexica dance group, Tlahulil, led by Mixtec accomplished dancer, Carlos Rivera.
TLALLI means Earth in the ancient Nahuatl language of the Mexica (/Meh-Shee-Kha/) People. This one-day celebration offers the audience an opportunity to honour and thank the Earth as the main source of sustenance for both ancient ancestral civilizations and modern-day cultures around the planet.
Tlalli Festival aims to continue building bridges between Indigenous Peoples of the Americas, as well as with non-Indigenous communities from around the world, while fostering respect for one another.
The audience can look forward to a unique celebration in which the focus is to acknowledge the land, the traditional protectors of it, and the thousands of Indigenous migrant farm workers who work in the fields each year to deliver fresh produce to all Canadian tables. Once again, Tlalli will welcome migrant farm worker as special guest of the event.
On the culinary department, this year Tlalli Festival will present the renowned chef Suri Guzman, hailing from the remote mountains in the ancestral land of the Zoque and Mayan People (Chiapas, Mexico). Chef Suri Guzman will share her unique, traditional recipes such as Ningüijuti, Tzihuamonte, Chipilin con Bolita to make this a truly exquisite and unique culinary experience¬, with the fresh flavours and produce harvested from the Plan B Organic Farms.
Vegetarian/vegan options will also be available.

Tlalli Festival invites and welcomes Peoples of all nations, colors, ethnicities and beliefs to join this one-day celebration and opportunity for anyone wanting to ground and reconnect themselves with our beloved homeland: Tlalli.
