Events Description
Two young women create an online forum just for themselves, like a small, remote digital island. It’s a refuge from the world and its violence, a protective shield for both of them. This peaceful feminine oasis quickly attracts attention and arouses all kinds of envy. Several people decide they want a piece of the island, going so far as to attempt to invade the digital space over which its creators are gradually losing control.
Featuring a large cast from across the French-speaking world (French Guiana, Canada and Congo), Les Sentinelles reflects on these online spaces, which sometimes feel larger than life and which we continue to inhabit, on the fringes of reality.
The play highlights the current challenges of the digital world, linking them to issues of human relations, gender, and colonialism. Olivier Sylvestre’s text draws attention to the many obstacles women face online simply by virtue of being there. A feminist utopia, a refuge providing an escape from the conventions of the real world.
This production received support from the Commission Internationale du Théâtre Francophone (CITF) and benefited from a creation residency at the Centre du Théâtre d’Aujourd’hui.
