One of literature’s most beloved figures, Don Quixote, takes center stage in two works. Telemann’s Burlesque de Quixotte traces the fabled knight’s adventures with sidekick Sancho Panza and his longing for Princess Dulcinea. At the same time, Aulis Sallinen’s The Nocturnal Dances of Don Juan Quixote merges Quixote’s world with that of the libertine Don Juan in a thrilling concerto for cello and orchestra performed by Johannes Moser, “one of the finest of young virtuoso cellists” (Gramophone).
Johannes Moser will also bring his signature flair to C.P.E. Bach’s Third Cello Concerto, a work of charming lyricism and exuberant dances, and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 11 closes the evening with some of the composer’s most intimate and beautiful music, reimagined in Gustav Mahler’s arrangement for string orchestra.
